Rose Petal Wine vs Rose Wine
First of all, let's clear the air on rose wine and rose petal wine. Rose wine can be the same as rose petal wine, however, if you are missing the accent over the e, then it is rosé wine.
Rosé wine is wine made from the juice of red grapes. The difference is, rosé grape juice has minimal contact with the grape skins. Therefore, leaving a slight pink color.

Alternatively, red wine is deep red because of the long contact with the skins.
Now, rose petal wine is worlds apart. Rose petal wine is made with... rose petals. As a winemaker, you can choose how you want to make rose petal wine.
- Use a rosé wine kit and add rose petals during the winemaking process.
- Use other herbs with rose petals to create an herbal wine.
- Use honey, or organic brown sugar, to create a herbal honey wine or "herbal mead".
The list is endless!

#1. Yes, Rose Petals!
First, rose petals. Which comes to no surprise! Mountain Rose Herbs has a stunning array of organic herbs perfect for rose petal wine.
Obviously, rose petals give a lovely aroma I am sure we have both experienced!
But, the rose petals give a lightly tart-sweet flavor when added to beverages, syrups, wines, teas, etc.
The flavor of rose wine can be endearing as it compliments the beautiful floral aromatics.
To use rose petals for wine:
- Create a tea with the rose petals
- Let it cool down
- Then begin the winemaking process
To use with juice:
- Create a tea with the rose petals in a small amount of water
- Let it cool
- Add to your preferred fruit juice
- Then begin the winemaking process
#2. Are You Feeling Honey or Juicy?
Along with rose petals as a rose wine ingredient, we also have fruit juice or honey water.
Now, fruit juice or honey water will act as the "fermentable sugars" for the wine. AKA, the sugars the yeast will eat in order to make wine. Optional to use honey and water instead for a "honey wine" alternative.
According to a bartenders guide, rose petals pair nicely with:
Citrus, Elderflower, Strawberry, Raspberry, Mint, Pomegranate
The citrus juice pairs well with the lightly sweet and tartness of rose petals. So, orange juice, lemon, grapefruit, etc.
Additionally, fruit juice adds another component to rose wine that can be fun to experiment with differing flavors and fruits!
Important: Purchase a juice that is sweet, but with minimal added sugars!
Alternatively, if you want to do a honey wine, use purified water and natural, local, organic honey.
#3. The Most Important Ingredient
A very important component to the winemaking process: YEAST!
Champagne wine yeast will deliver a clean, crisp finish to your wines. It is commonly used in cider making as well.
I fermented fruit with this wine yeast and it created a crispy fermented flavor that was very elegant.

Another option is to create your own yeast population by creating your own yeast starter. This practice is a more primitive than your standard commercial yeast, but worth a try!
#4. The Super Trifecta You Don't Want to Miss
The trifecta is wine tannin, acid blend, and pectic enzyme!
These three ingredients are simple to add and they will, more than likely, boost your wine to top tier levels.
All three of these will balance out the flavors of your rose petal wine, and are necessary if you are interested in aging your homemade wine.
General Rule of Thumb:
- Use about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of each to one gallon of wine you are making.
- Use personal discretion with tannins, if you like them add more, if you don't maybe only add 1/8 teaspoon.

#5. Gas it Up The WHOLE Time
A little secret tip: use argon gas!
When I worked in wineries in Napa, California we used argon gas religiously. We would use it twice a day on partial barrels, kegs, bottles, etc.
Argon gas displaces oxygen so your wine will NOT spoil!!
Luckily, we can get a small handheld bottle of argon gas that is perfect for preserving wine, and also eliminates oxygen in the beloved fermentation process!
Argon gas can be seen as a wine preserver due to its 'antioxidant' abilities.
It is a GREAT option to use argon gas during the winemaking process in the fermenter, before bottling, and intermittently throughout the wines fermentation process!
#6. Let's Clarify Something...
Think about when you juice an orange or even looking at a glass of fruit juice. It is most likely not clear, and even, cloudy.
The clarification of wine will assist in just that!
It is good practice, but it is not necessary (it does make for a photo worthy glass of wine though!).

The number one wine clarifier among winemakers at home is bentonite clay. This clay is naturally found in Wyoming, believe it or not.
#7. Last, But Optional
Making homemade wine can have it's challenges and it's a craft. We have to remember that above all else, so we can have fun, experiment, mess up, and enjoy the ride.
To further experiment with winemaking, especially with rose petal wine... We can add varying herbs and spices to compliment the rose aromas and flavors!
Of course this is optional, however, it can add some amazing dimension within your wines. I know from making herbal beers.
